 As salaam alaikum,
Just as a follow-up to this- doesn't a ghusl override wudu (in the
sense that performing a ghusl automatically puts you in the state of
wudu also)?

Yes, in the sense that whatever has the effect of raises major impurification must also have the effect of raising minor impurification with it.

And keep in mind that the cause for minor and major impurity differ.
