Litanies
Associated With Daily Prayers
Q
al-salamu `alaykum
What are some of the adhkar that should be done in association
with the daily prayers?
A
wa `alaykum al-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu
What
follows, in sha Allah, gives gives the more important litanies
[adhkar] and supplications [du`a] associated with the
daily prayers.
The column on the right is taken from Matalib
`Uli Nuha Fi Sharh Ghayat al-Muntaha. The original text from
Ghayat al-Muntaha is intact, while the commentary is
abridged.
The column on the left is a rough translation of the
portions from Ghayat al-Muntaha and most the commentary; the
commentary has been set off with parenthesis. I have not translated
the actual litanies because this can be found elsewhere. Shaykh Nuh
Keller's The Reliance Of The Traveler and Al-Maqasid
contain most – if not all – of the litanies mentioned
below.
Text in this color
indicate transliterations of the litanies. These are marked in both
columns as an aid for those who can read Arabic script but cannot yet
read Arabic.
After the [final] taslim, it is a sunna to say:
astaghfir ullah, three times
allahumma anta s-salam wa minka s-salam takarakta ya dha l-jalali wa l-ikram (Ibn Nasr said that it is intended that one say the above while sitting, though if one were to say it after rising and going, the more obvious opinion is that one has achieved the sunna since there is no prohibition in this. If one was preoccupied from doing this and then remembers it and mentions it, the more obvious opinion is that one is entitled to its particular reward when the time is near because there is an excuse. But as for intentionally omitting it and then rectifying it [by saying it] after a long time: the more obvious ruling is that its particular reward has been missed while the reward for general litanies remains.)
la ilaha ill allahu wahdadu la sharika lah, lahu l-mulku wa lahu l-hamdu wa huwa `ala kulli shay'in qadir, la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah, la ilaha ill allah, wa la na`budu illa iyyahu mukhlisina lahu d-dina wa lau kariha l-kafirun
allahumma la mani` li ma a`tayt, wa la mu`ti lima mana`t, wa la yanfa` dha l-jaddi minka l-jad
subhan allah, wa l-hamdu lilla, w-allahu akbar, thirty-three times. There is no harm if one increases the number (since no prohibition from increasing has been related here, as in zakat). One finishes the amount for all of them together [meaning that one repeats the three together, then again, and so on until reaching thirty-three times]
One counts this and the istighfar using his hand
The one hundred are completed by saying: la ilaha ill allahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahu l-mulku wa lahu l-hamdu wa huwa `ala killi shay'in qadir.
It is recommended to say all of this aloud.

One should make a supplication,
after each daily obligatory prayer, especially after the Morning and
Mid-Afternoon Prayers because the angels attend them (and they say
"amin” to supplication, and so it is more likely to be accepted)
– especially the imam (so that others follow him).
It is not
offensive (for the imam) to single himself out in the supplication –
according to Imam Ahmad's opinion – as long as it is not a
supplication where others say "amin” (like an individual's
supplication, during tashahhud and prostration, and the like).
Otherwise, he makes it - and if he does not, then he has deceived
them – and it is the same for the supplication for qunut.
It
is preferable
to keep the supplication short
begin with by praising and glorifying Allah [al-hamdu lillah, subhan allah], and to end one's supplication with it
to makes prayers and blessings upon the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) at the beginning and the end
It is not offensive to raise one's gaze to the
sky during the supplication (contrary to [Shaykh `Abd al-Qadir
al-Jaylani's] al-Ghunya).
It is offensive
to raise one's voice while making supplication during prayer and outside of prayer, except for Pilgrims
for the imam to make supplicate while facing the qibla; instead he should face the followers
(While supplicating) one should
implore
raise the hands to the chest, with the fingers outstretched
supplicate using a well-known supplication (meaning: related from the Quran, Sunna, the Pious Forebears)
repeat it three times (since it part of imploring)
avoid rhyme (but as for the supplications that are narrated with rhyme, such as the supplication for qunut, supplicating with them is required)
[make the] supplication all-inclusive
be well-behaved (in one's manner and phrasing, so if one is sitting he should sit in the manner of the lowest slave in front of the most magnificent lord), have humility, (be submissive,) be determined, have longing, presence of heart
(flatter Him, implore Him using [tawassal] His names, His attributes, His oneness [tawhid])
(to give sadaqa before making the supplication)
Conditions for supplication [to be accepted]
include: sincerity and avoiding the unlawful (including: food, drink,
clothes, and others).
(One should seek out the times when
supplications are answered: the last third of the night, at the call
to prayer, between the call to prayer and the call to its
commencement, after the obligatory daily prayers, on Friday when the
imam ascends the minbar until the end of the prayer, and the
last hour after Mid-Afternoon Prayer on Friday.)
One should
expect the answer without being impatient by saying: "I supplicated
You, and You did not answer me!” (One supplicates and waits for the
answer. It, too, is an act of worship. Ibn `Uyayna said: "One is
not ordered to petition except to be given.”
