Prophet Yūsuf
- peace be upon him,
who is worthy of the praises in the Qur'ān
It
is reported that the persapient jurist (al-faqīh)
Abū
al-Laith
- may Allah have mercy with him - has said:
Surely, Allah has much praised prophet Josef (Yūsuf,
peace be upon him) in eight different verses in Sura Yūsuf,
the 12th Sura:
1 - When his brothers had mistreated him as told in the
Quran, Prophet Yūsuf (peace be upon him) directed
their enmity against Satan, whom he made responsible in
the following words:
... after Shaitan had sown dissensions
between me and my brothers...
Qur'ān
12, 100
2 - When Putiphar tried to seduce him, he exclaimed:
I
seek Allah's refuge, surely my Lord made good my abode.
Qur'ān 12, 23
3 - Prophet Yūsuf (peace be upon him) preferred jail
to being victim of his sensual desires and he said:
My Lord! prison is dearer to me than that to which they
invite me ...
Qur'ān 12,33
4. Yūsuf also said:
I do not declare myself free, most surely (man's) self is
wont to command (him to do) evil, except such as my Lord
has had mercy on, surely my Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.
Qur'ān 12,53
He only said this after it had become evident, that someone
else had committed the certain sin.
5. When his brothers had come to see him, to ask him for
forgiveness, he told them the following:
He
said: (There shall be) no reproof against you this day;
Allah may forgive you, and He is the most Merciful of the
merciful.
Qur'ān 12,92
6. Yūsuf sent his coat to his father via his brothers.
He wished for them to bring - this time - joy to their father,
after having brought much distress earlier, therefore he
said:
Take
this my shirt and cast it on my father's face, he will (again)
be able to see, and come to me with all your families.
Qur'ān 12, 93
7. When Yūsuf later met his father, he did not mention
the tests which he had to endure, but instead he mentioned
the extraordinary mercies which had been bestowed upon him
and said:
...
O my father! this is the significance of my vision of old;
my Lord has indeed made it to be true; and He was indeed
kind to me when He brought me forth from the prison and
brought you from the desert ...
Qur'ān 12,100
8. When finally everything had been completed, Prophet Yūsuf
longed for death, as he wished to leave this world, so he
said in his prayer:
My
Lord! Thou hast given me of the kingdom and taught me of
the interpretation of sayings: Originator of the heavens
and the earth! Thou art my guardian in this world and the
hereafter; make me die a muslim and join me with the good
/ righteous.
Qur'ān 12,101
These are the noble characteristics and generous nature
of Yūsuf according to the Islamic Tradition. And Allah
speaks the truth and guides on the right way.
