The Sentiment(al)
René Guénon, EDH
[As it may be, it is not less true that] sentiment is only relativity and dependance [contingence], and that a doctrine which addresses it [ie. sentiment] and to which it reacts can only be itself relative and contingent; and this can be observed particularily at the need of "consolations" to which the religious viewpoint is responding to a great extent.
Truth in itself is not at all consolant; if someone finds it such, it is certainly better for him, but the consolation which he experiences does not arise from the doctrine, it comes from himself only and the particular dispositions of his (own) sentimentality. On the contrary, a doctrine which adapts itself to the exigencies of the sentimental being and which (then) has to reclothe itself in a sentimental form cannot (from then on) be identified with absolute and total truth.
