{ فَاطِرُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ جَعَلَ لَكُم مِن أَنفُسِكُم أَزْوَاجًا وَمِنَ الْأَنْعَامِ أَزْوَاجًا يَذْرَؤُكُمْ فِيهِ لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ البَصِيرُ }
{The Originator of the heavens and the earth; He has appointed for you, of yourselves, pairs, and pairs also of the cattle, therein multiplying you. Like Him there is naught; He is the All-hearing, the All-seeing.}
42-11
Meaning that there is nothing in existence (wujûd) that resembles Allah سبحانه و تعالى or is a likeness of Him, since existence is nothing but Allah's own Self-Disclosure. So there is nothing in existence other than Him that might be His ’likeness’ or opposite.
May His Majesty be exalted!
Clarification
Allah is not in creation, and He is not even ’outside of this creation’, because this would define and limit Him, Who is limitless, encompassing everything.
He is beyond 'inside' or 'outside', may His Majesty be exalted.
- Allah is one, without partner.
- Nothing is like Him.
- Nothing debilitates Him.
- No deity exists save Him.
- He is pre-existent without origin, eternal without end.
- He neither perishes nor ceases to exist.
- Nothing will be except what He wills.
- Imaginations cannot attain Him; comprehensions cannot perceive Him.
The Creed of Imam Al-Tahawi
- True knowledge belongs to God Alone,
- And human knowledge can be reliable only inasmuch as it partakes of divine knowledge.
(See appropriate verse in Quran 2-255)
Ibn 'Arabi, W.C. Chittick
{ وَاصْبِرْ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ الْمُحْسِنِينَ }
{ اللَّهُ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ لَا تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ لَّهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ مَن ذَا الَّذِي يَشْفَعُ عِندَهُ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِشَيْءٍ مِّنْ عِلْمِهِ إِلَّا بِمَا شَاءَ وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَلَا يَئُودُهُ حِفْظُهُمَا وَهُوَ الْعَلِيُّ الْعَظِيمُ }
{ Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of (all) existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. Who is he that intercedeth with Him save by His leave? He knows that which is in front of them and that which is behind them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge save what He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and He is never weary of preserving them. He is the Sublime, the Tremendous.}
Sura 2-255
{ ذٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلۡحَقُّ وَأَنَّ مَا يَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِهِ ٱلۡبَاطِلُ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلۡعَلِيُّ ٱلۡكَبِيرُ }
{That is because Allah is the Truth, and that which they call upon other than Him is False, and because Allah is the Sublime, the Great.}
31-30
That which is mentioned is so because Allah - He is the True/ the Real - the established truth/ reality and whatever they call on (read yadʿūna; or tadʿūna ‘you call on’) or whatever they worship besides Him is evanescent falsehood and because Allah is the High (Sublime) Exalted above His creation by virtue of His subjugation of them, the Great, the Mighty.
- Tafsir al-Jalalayn
{ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اعْبُدُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ }
{ Now O humankind! Worship your Lord Who has created you as well as those before you, then(1) you may attain reverent piety toward Him and His protection(2) }
2-21
{ الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْأَرْضَ فِرَاشًا وَالسَّمَاءَ بِنَاءً وَأَنزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَخْرَجَ بِهِ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ رِزْقًا لَّكُمْ فَلَا تَجْعَلُوا لِلَّهِ أَندَادًا وَأَنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ }
{ And Who has made the earth a bed(3) for you, and the sky a canopy. He sends down from the sky water, with which He brings forth fruits for your provision. So do not set up rivals to God (4) when you know(5).}
2-22
Tafsir Ali Ünal
1 - la‘alla ‘so that’ is essentially an optative but when spoken by God it denotes an affirmative, i.e. ‘then’.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn, trans. Feras Hamza
2 - against any kind of straying and its consequent punishment in this world and the Hereafter
3 - comfortable, couch-like floor
4 - as deities, lords and objects of worship
5 - that there can be no deities, lords, creators and providers at all to worship save God

Tahawi's "Doctrine" (al-`Aqida )
Faith And Belief, by Hasan Gai Eaton
[My master] Abû `Uthmân said to me* one day:
"Muhammad! If someone asked you:
Where is the One you worship, what would you answer?
I said: 'I would answer:
- He is where He never ceased to be.'
He said: 'What if he asked: Where was He in pre-eternity?'
I said: 'I would answer:
- Where He is now.'"
That is:
He was when there was no place, and He is now as He ever was.
Abû Uthmân was pleased with my answer. He took off his shirt and he gave it to me.
